Sotheby’s Modern Contemporary African Art Auction features rare works of Nigerian Ben Enwonwu and Ghanaian El Anatsui. The auction features 120 works from across the continent which includes newly discovered gems by some giants of African Art.
Some of the outstanding works up for sale are El Anatusi’s shimmering bottle-cap sculpture, twelve extraordinary fresh to the market works by Enwonwu as well as two paintings by rising star Amaoka Boafo.
One of Enwonwu’s pieces among the lots is ‘The Court of the Oba of Benin’, a masterpiece depicting festivities in the royal court of the traditional ruler of Benin. The work was done after Enwonwu’s apprenticeship in the guild of Benin bronze casters in 1943.
other works by the artist include a rare 1956 prototype of his best-known work, Anyanwu, a sensitive portrayal of his beautiful 19-year-old niece, Regina. There are also two paintings and sculptures from his famed Africa Dance Series and Aghogho Mmuo, one of the finest of his masquerade dancers ever to come to the market.
